Question Engineering Questions Thread

I am creating this thread for you to ask questions as they relate to real engineering. I know many of you that are younger and being involved in K'Nex is part of wanting to be an engineer later on.

I am in my 4th year of Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Tech, so I should be able to help you answer some questions, especially about the process of becoming an engineer and what they actually do.

So, what are all the different types of engineers?

Swimzone: there are TONS of engineering types. A few that i know off the top of my head:

Mechanical Engineering: working with mechanical systems, stresses, and many other things. BGT can elaborate further and better than I
Electrical Engineering: working with circuits, wiring and wiring schematics, among other things
Aeronautical Engineering: working with craft that fly in our atmosphere, like planes and helicopters
Aerospace Engineering: working with craft that fly above out atmosphere (could be wrong here, but definitely higher up than aeronautical)
Computer Engineering: working with computer hardware
Computer Science (usually incorporated with Engineering): workig with computer software (programming)

Some other ones that are pretty self-explanitory:
Biomedical Engineering
Architecture (loosely engineering i guess)
Chemical Engineering
Civil Engineering

No.

Not even close. It is a running joke here at Georgia Tech how ugly the girls are.

Could just be me, but the smarter girls aren't always the best looking, however I think appearance and behavior is much more important than the looks.

Ugh Ugh getting of topic here!

I had a question too,

I heard people say that there is a shortage on engineers, can you confirm this, and how likely can you get a job after you finish college?

Engineering is definitely a field that is in demand.

IDK if you would know this but if one wanted to study chemical engineering should one study more chemistry or physix?

Chemistry, although you will still have to take entry level physics. But you will have to take regular chemistry and the harder organic and inorganic chemistry courses.

How about some basic physics formula as applied to Knex machines? How do you figure the force exerted on a knex vehicle by a rubber band or electric motor? Can you figure out how much Potential Energy
was put into a Knex spring motor by the weight of the vehicle and the distance traveled before inertia and friction stopped it? Then of course, there are the basic formulas of roller coaster physics, which might be useable on Big Ball Machine design.

Is architecture included as engineering?

It is not. Although engineers work closely with architects.

This is especially true if you work in the Construction Engineering field like I do
