Question K'Nex Contest 3 Ideas?

That time again to come up with another contest. I think we need something pretty broad to encourage some more entries.

I've had a bit of an idea for a Contest for quite some time; this event would essentially be what I call the TriK'Nexlon; a three-part contest where there are three different events people compete in where they have to put their building abilities to the real test.

I like it. A three part thing, with no huge models. Things that are small that everyone can do.

Well, obviously you wouldn't post all three for the same round; I mean along the lines of one model per contest round, and then three rounds altogether. Then, at the end, everything gets tallied up, and the winner is the one who has the best mean score.

I could explain this in further detail, but it would take all day to write out.

Sounds like a good idea, but you need need to have like a specific model they should build that vary in theme. Like a vehicle, a puzzle game and a mechanical sculpture (mini ballmachine). Those are 3 entirely different things and really test your building skill.

How about the mother of all modification contests? You can select a design and modify it to work better, to be more efficient, anything as long as it is original and it improves the overall design.

I was thinking along the lines of starting out with a certain type of K'Nex model you don't usually build that would fall into one of a few categories (Weapons, coasters, contraptions, vehicles, puzzles, amusement park rides, household items, etc.), then maybe something like a fusion K'Nex model that fuses two different K'Nex models from the various categories into one K'Nex model, and then close with some other random K'Nex model (I'd still need to decide).
Heck, imagine what it would be like if it had to use micro pieces and bricks. Hee hee hee.

This would allow more freedom when building, but encourage versatility among what is built. IMO, you can't call yourself a serious K'Nex builder if you only build within a limited range of things, but you can say you're serious if you use enough variety among what you do build.

DJ: The problem with modification contests is that it doesn't encourage people to fully use their imagination, which is what K'Nex building is all about. Rather, you can simply take an already-existing K'Nex model and switch out three pieces, and then say, "hey, look, this is better than the original," and that makes for a pretty bad contest because it's a bunch of things other people had already invented.

I'd be slightly more supportive of it if the original K'Nex model was also self-made, but it's still not something that sounds too appealing to me. Sorry.

Do you think we could get enough entries for something like that?

Maybe you could have a ball machine contest with a restriction like "It needs to be within a (X*Y*Z) 10*20*10 blue-rod box."

Post Use your own ideas

Come on, guys! DJ's right! We shoud make a unlimited-piece contest with a new topic. Like a ride-able car, or a new ball machine lift system! OK, look! If we come up with the right ideas; It will make building a whole different model with new ideas easy! That's what I have to say!

Only thing is DJ wasn't talking about what you were talking about, and your idea is easily shot down by this information:

The problem with unlimited pieces, first off, is that it's kind of unfair to people building smaller models--everyone's always going to look at the bigger models and be more impressed with them than with the smaller models.

Second, building a car a person could actually ride in (even a one-person vehicle) would probably use at least 50,000 parts (and would fall apart in an instant).

Third, the "right ideas" for you aren't exactly the "right ideas" for everyone. Not everyone can do the same things you can do, and not everything everyone else can do is something you can do.

I like having some degree of flexibility in a contest, but there's a difference between reasonable flexibility and barely being a contest at all. To compensate for unlimited piece use, we'd need to impose a ton of other restrictions to make it fair.

I'd prefer a size limit instead of a piece limit. Because more complex models often use lots and lots of small parts, spacers, gears and chains etc.

And also multiple categories would be a good idea.

Post Use Basic Pieces

I don't even know if anyone made their minds up, but I'm guessing they haven't yet.
Anyways, Weasel was right. How about if we all try making something that only takes basic pieces (rods, connectors, 3D connectors, motors, etc.). It can also have a piece limit of.......... 750? Does that seem right, or does it have to be a certain type?

The idea's so far are:

* 3 rounds contest

* modification
* ball
* marble
* mechanical sculpture (not necessarily a ball machine)
* puzzle
* vehicle

* piece limit
* size limit

I think the 3 round thing is good. And personally I'm most interested in building a marble machine or mechanical sculpture. And I would prefer a size limit for the marble machine but a piece limit for the mechanical sculpture.

I'm a bit tired on counting pieces though..

I think some mechanical sculpture would be cool (like a theme park attraction or such)
With size limit ofcourse.

something simple like a bridge of XXX in lenght using XXX pieces.
or, bridge with height restriction of XXX and width XXX, lenght XXX no piece limit
Winner is there person's bridge that can hold the most weight, with photo/video footage for proof. Simple and effective, all should be able to do it as it does not involve any balls, motors etc... just the simple rods and connectors?

with regard to the 3 rounds... you are allowed to use an extra number of pieces to strengthen it per round. just an idea

I have a Idea :
you have to build 3 models one Small, Medium and Large.
small can be 2ft or lower medium is 2-4ft and large is 4-6ft.
the winner is the one with the models remaining.
good Idea?
