Default [Making a Gun] Understanding the Workings.

Making a k'nex gun may look complicated the first time, and it sure is. However if you know the basics you will find it very easy.

Let's take a look at a real gun first so we know what is going on.

The main body consists out of 7 parts:
-Barrel
-Stock(Back of the gun)
-Firing Chamber including the Firing Pin
-Handle
-Trigger
-Clip
-Ironsight

The barrel and handle speaks for itself, the stock does too . The firing Chamber + Pin is where the real action starts. The Trigger and Clip also contain moving parts. The Ironsight helps you aim.

Now, what does a k'nexgun need to work?
Another illustration:

You can see the basic parts in the K'nexgun too: Barrel, Firing Pin, Stock, Handle and Trigger and even an Ironsight.

Now let's take a little bit more in depth look at what gets your gun to fire.

The most important part may be your firing chamber, you must've been wondering how you would get a rod to float in the middle of a tube!
This is how:

You can see I used the Tan connectors. This keeps the rod centered in the Barrel.

The Firing pin usually is a rod with a Brown/Orange connector and another rod at the other end going through a series of holes to keep it aligned. Like this: ---------=o=------------
The rubber bands go through the connector in the middle.

The Trigger mechanism is a very complicated part:

You can see that when the trigger pulled the rod pulls the Green "Hinge" part shown on the right. This in turn pulls another rod going through the holes in the 2 Orange connectors with a blue spacer in between.
When you cock the gun the rod will drop in front of the gap just before the firing chamber, the Firing Pin will rest on the rod that just dropped in front of it. When you pull the trigger the rod will move back and the Firing Pin will shoot forward and shoot the bullet.

These are the basics that a gun requires.

To get you all started, I found this tutorial on the Internet, it shows you how to build a pump action gun. This was the first gun I built too and was very amused with the results.

You better get used to it, guns are complicated to make. Tuning them is even more tedious, but really, that gun is awesome, just take 45 minutes to build it and enjoy yourself.

This looks very cool. I might just start building a few of these.

The tutorial you linked us to has a very unoriginal gun. It was copied from Instructables, and the original creator never did get any credit.

The gun is called "OSNJCKMA2" on ibles.

Infact, most of the stuff on that tutorial site was stolen from ibles. The next one that comes to mind is his "Semi auto", which was really made by oodalumps.

Sorry if im sounding harsh, but Im just saying...

I know that that tutorial isn't by the original creator, fact is is that Instructables is very very slow for me in Holland, so I was glad I could still build it.

Yeah, I guess that would help you. I found out about this guy when he tried to post youtube videos about the guns, and the whole community flamed him for it. I even flagged his posts for violating copyrights.

Alright so this place isn't too active in the weapons category I see but maybe I can help that. Would you guys want a more in-depth guide to building K'nex weapons? Would you use it if I made one at least? I could start you off basic, giving very simple examples and help you work your way up so you can get used to each feature bit by bit. I won't waste my time though if it doesn't interest anyone here. I'd like to see you guys get more involved. You all have experience with other types of creations so I would think that you may overall have the ability to make very good weapons if you just knew how to easily make one.

I would be glad if you did, my "tutorial" is pretty superficial and not really innovative. Pleas show us what you can do!

Can we make collaborations here? I would like to help making the guide with TD. Normally I would just link you to the guide we have on instructables but it's rather outdated.

I don't see why not? I can't wait to see what you guys can come up with!

I myself won't be building guns for a while because I'm currently working on my coaster and the electronics, so I don't have a lot of parts left. But I will when my project is done!

No I mean if it is possible for more than 1 person to edit a guide or topic if neither are admins, thus the collaboration part.

Ok.
